Ten Things You Should Know Before Going to Mumbai, India

Mumbai, India, is a large city in the southern part of the country. Also known as Bombay, Mumbai is a chaotic blend of ancient Indian traditions and modern entertainment and business. As you plan a trip to Mumbai, keep in mind the cultural, social and safety standards that will keep you comfortable and healthy throughout your visit.
  1. Watch What You Eat

    • Food in India is notorious for giving travelers nasty cases of diarrhea and other unpleasant intestinal bacteria. To minimize your risk, avoid eating food that looks as though it has been sitting out for a long period of time, both at restaurants and street food carts.

    Don't Drink the Water

    • When traveling in Mumbai, stick to bottled water to avoid waterborne bacteria. Look for recognized brands, and always check that the seal is intact before drinking. Carry a small bottle of iodine tablets for situations when the only available water is suspicious.

    Prepare for the Heat

    • During much of the year, Mumbai is hot and humid. To stay cool and keep in line with cultural standards of modesty, pack loose, light clothing in pale colors to reflect the sun.

    Bollywood

    • Mumbai is a major entertainment center in India, and many Bollywood films are made nearby. When visiting the city, you can take advantage of first-release films and experience the cultural adoration of local film stars.

    Female Travelers

    • If you are a woman who will be traveling alone in Mumbai, prepare for a certain level of harassment from local men. To minimize the attention, dress modestly, avoid making eye contact on the street, and ignore all verbal taunts.

    Stylish Restaurants

    • Mumbai is home to some of India's finest restaurants, bars and clubs. The best options are scattered throughout the wealthier parts of the city; ask at your hotel for a nearby recommendation.

    Trains

    • In Mumbai, you can take advantage of the train network to get to places around the city for a low fare. For the most comfortable ride, splurge on the first-class fares, and do not take trains at rush hour. Always keep an eye on your belongings.

    Currency

    • Mumbai uses the same currency as the rest of India: the rupee. Abbreviated Rs, there were about 46 rupees to the US dollar in August 2010. You can withdraw rupees from widely available ATMs, and credit cards are accepted at larger shops throughout the city.

    Chowpatty Beach

    • A must-see stop for many travelers to Mumbai is Chowpatty Beach, where you can escape the city and stroll the sands. Try different foods from beach-side stalls and go with a friend at night for the cooler air.

    Bazaars

    • Mumbai is famous for its maze-like bazaars. Check out the Chor Bazaar, which is also known as the Thieves Market, for antiques or head to the Zaveri Bazaar for silver products. Many companies include walking tours to help navigate the narrow aisles.
