Genetic evidence indicates that Australian Aboriginal peoples and populations of the Indian subcontinent share deep common ancestry dating back to the initial human dispersal out of Africa, approximately 65,000 years ago.
However, Australian Aborigines are more closely related to other indigenous groups in Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands. The genetic similarities with Indians reflect this ancient shared origin rather than recent gene flow.
Both groups descend from early waves of modern humans migrating along the southern route through Asia.
