Australian Rules Football (AFL), affectionately known as "footy," is the dominant football code and most popular spectator sport in Australia. The professional Australian Football League (AFL) comprises 18 teams from five states.
While the sport's heartland is undeniably Australian, it has an international dimension. The Australian Football International Cup brings together amateur teams from around the world (including the USA, Canada, Papua New Guinea, Ireland, and several European and Asian nations) to compete in Australia every three years. Additionally, expat leagues operate in numerous countries. However, the professional game remains exclusively Australian.
