Driving from Brisbane to Melbourne: Distance, Time, and Route via the Hume Highway
The drive from Brisbane (QLD) to Melbourne (VIC) is one of Australia's great interstate road trips: ~1,700 km (1,056 mi) via the inland route, taking 18–20 hours of pure driving.
Standard Route (Inland / Hume Highway)
- Brisbane → Newcastle: Pacific Motorway (M1) / New England Hwy (A15) — ~750 km, 8.5 hr.
- Newcastle → Sydney: M1 (Pacific Motorway) — ~160 km, 2 hr.
- Sydney → Albury/Wodonga: Hume Highway (M31) — ~550 km, 5.5 hr.

Coastal Route (Princes Highway / A1)
- Longer: ~2,000 km, 23+ hr.
- Scenic: Coastline, beaches, towns (Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Batemans Bay, Lakes Entrance).
- Slower: Single-lane sections, traffic lights, holiday congestion.
Essential Planning
- Breaks: Minimum 15 min / 2 hr (fatigue law). Overnight stop recommended (e.g., Coffs Harbour, Gundagai, Holbrook).
- Fuel: Fill before long stretches (e.g., Hay, Narrandera); prices vary.
- Traffic: Sydney basin (avoid 7–9am, 4–6pm); holiday peaks (Easter, Christmas, school hols).
- Conditions: Check Live Traffic NSW, VicTraffic for floods, fires, roadworks.
- Vehicle: Service beforehand; spare tyre, water, snacks, UHF radio (Ch 40).
Alternatives
- Fly: 2.5 hr (BNE→MEL); $100–$300.
- Train: NSW TrainLink XPT (Brisbane → Sydney → Melbourne, 26+ hr, $150–$300).
- Freight yourself: Car transport + fly.
The inland Hume is faster; the coast is prettier. Either way, it's a journey across a continent's breadth.
