What Happened to Convicts in Australia After Their Sentences?
Freed convicts could become free settlers, receiving land grants to start anew. Yet many faced hardships:
- Social stigma: Former convict status bred prejudice, limiting acceptance.
- Economic constraints: Economy was agriculture-based; ex-convicts mostly found manual labor (farming, mining) with low wages, harsh conditions, little mobility.
- Adaptation struggles: Some lacked skills/education; a few returned to crime.
Many turned to trades (carpentry, blacksmithing, shoemaking) or small farming. A minority achieved wealth and social integration, but most remained in the working class. Over time, many contributed to colonial development and gained acceptance.
