Why South Australia’s Settlement Was Unique in Australia

South Australia (founded 1836) broke the convict-colony mold:

  1. Free Settlement from Day One: No convicts. Planned by South Australian Company using Wakefield’s “systematic colonization”—land sales funded free labor migration.
  2. Founding Principles: Religious freedom, civil liberties, no state church, secret ballot (1856—world first), male suffrage (1856).
  3. Egalitarian Land Policy: No primogeniture; small farms encouraged; Aboriginal reserves (though often violated).
  4. Diversified Economy: Wheat, copper (Burra, Kapunda), wool, wine, port—no single-resource dependency.
  5. Self-Government Pioneer: 1857—first Australian colony with full responsible government.
  6. Selective Immigration: Skilled artisans, farmers, professionals targeted—not open-door.

Result: A society built on design, not default—distinctly more urban, literate, and reformist than its eastern neighbors.
