Australia's Most Bushfire-Prone Regions
Bushfire risk in Australia is concentrated in five broad regions where climate, vegetation, and topography align to create hazardous conditions:
- South-Eastern Australia (NSW, Victoria, SA): Temperate forests, eucalyptus woodlands, hot dry summers, strong winds.
- South-Western Australia (WA): Mediterranean climate—hot, dry summers; highly flammable kwongan heath and jarrah/marri forests.
- Northern Australia (NT, North QLD): Tropical savanna; fires peak in the dry season (May–Oct) across vast grasslands and open woodlands.
- Tasmania: Wet temperate forests; fire risk highest in drier eastern/central areas during summer.
- Eastern Queensland Coast: Subtropical rainforest margins and eucalypt forests; episodic severe fires in drought years.
Climate change is extending fire seasons and increasing intensity across all zones.
