Legal Age to Serve Alcohol in Queensland, Australia

18 Years Old – No Exceptions

In Queensland (and all Australian states/territories), the minimum legal age to serve alcohol is 18. This applies to any licensed venue: bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants, bottle shops, casinos, and events.

Mandatory Qualification: RSA Certificate

Before starting work, you must complete a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The nationally accredited unit is SITHFAB021 – Provide responsible service of alcohol.

  • Delivery: Online (4–6 hrs) or face-to-face.
  • Cost: ~AUD $25–$60.
  • Validity: Nationally recognized; no expiry, but refresher recommended if legislation changes.
  • Interstate: QLD RSA accepted in NSW, VIC, SA, WA, NT, TAS, ACT (some require brief bridging).

What RSA Covers

  • QLD Liquor Act 1992 obligations
  • Identifying intoxication (slurred speech, coordination loss, aggression)
  • Refusing service legally & safely
  • Preventing underage sales (ID checking: driver licence, passport, proof-of-age card)
  • Harm minimization & duty of care

Under 18?

You cannot serve, supply, or sell alcohol in any capacity—even with supervision. You can work in a venue in non-alcohol roles (kitchen, cleaning, hosting) if the license permits minors on premises.

Enforcement

Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) conducts covert audits. Fines: up to AUD $10,000+ for venues; AUD $3,000+ for individual staff. License suspension/revocation possible.

Bottom line: Turn 18 → do RSA → serve legally. No shortcuts.
