Where to Ski in Australia: The Snowy Mountains' Best Resorts

Australia's ski scene is concentrated in the Snowy Mountains (NSW/Victoria border), running June–October. Seven main resorts cater to all levels—though snow reliability varies by elevation.

New South Wales

  • Thredbo: Longest runs, highest lifted point (2,037m), village atmosphere, 50+ runs. Best for intermediates/advanced.
  • Perisher: Largest Southern Hemisphere resort (1,245 ha, 4 villages, 47 lifts). Connected to Thredbo via backcountry (experts only). Great variety.
  • Charlotte Pass: Highest village (1,765m), snow-sure, no day-trippers (oversnow transport only). Intermediate/advanced.
  • Selwyn Snowfields: Lower elevation (1,490m), family-friendly, affordable, gentle slopes. Most weather-vulnerable.

Victoria

  • Mt Buller: Closest to Melbourne (3h), largest VIC resort, 300 ha, 22 lifts, vibrant village. All levels.
  • Falls Creek: 450 ha, ski-in/ski-out village, reliable snow (1,600m base), cross-country trails. Family favorite.
  • Lake Mountain: 2h from Melbourne, cross-country focused (37km trails), limited downhill. Day-trip oriented.

Key Considerations

Snowmaking: All majors invest heavily—critical below 1,600m. Lift passes: Epic Pass (Perisher, Falls Creek, Hotham) / Mountain Collective (Thredbo, Buller). Lessons: Book early—school holidays sell out. Gear hire: Available at all resorts; off-mountain cheaper.

Beyond Downhill

Cross-country (Lake Mountain, Falls Creek, Mt Stirling), backcountry touring (guided only), snowshoeing, snowplay parks (Selwyn, Corin Forest near Canberra).
