How to Travel With Wine in an Airport

Taking alcohol with you on a plane ride has gotten a lot more complicated ever since the Transportation Security Administration started cracking down on carrying liquids over concerns about bomb-making. The TSA has enacted very strict rules when it comes to transporting liquids and alcohol, so you will need to keep a few things in mind if you are planning on bringing a favorite bottle of wine with you on your trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wine bottle or bottles in your checked baggage. You can't take it onto the plane with your carry-on luggage due to the TSA's restrictions on liquids of more than 3 ounces.

    • 2

Pack as many wine bottles as you like in your checked luggage, as TSA does not restrict any alcohol with an alcoholic content below 24 percent. Alcohol above 24 percent is restricted to just 5 liters per person, and alcohol above 70 percent is banned outright.

    • 3

Check the luggage as usual at the check-in counter. Keep in mind that packing multiple bottles of wine may cause your luggage to weigh a lot more, and the airline may require you to pay extra fees.
