How to Travel With a Pacemaker

A pacemaker is a small electrical unit that is surgically implanted underneath the skin. The pacemaker sends short electrical shocks to the heart to regulate an irregular beating heart or speed up a heart that beats too slow. Due to the sensitive nature of a pacemaker, there are a few things to keep in mind when preparing for travel.

    • 1

Consult with your physician before making any travel arrangements just to ensure your pacemaker is in good standing. It would not be beneficial to take a long distance trip and have a problem.

    • 2

Bring your pacemaker identification card to the airport with you on the day of travel. It will be necessary so that you may avoid delays at the security station.

    • 3

Tell an airport TSA representative that you have a pacemaker and would like to have a private search so you don't hold up the line. Airport staff will then assist you to the side so that your search can begin. You will be patted down by airport security staff instead of going through the metal detectors

Complete your security search and you are good to go. The plane ride is perfectly safe for you to ride with your pacemaker.
