How to Travel to Morocco

Morocco is a country rich in history and culture. Tangier is the first stop for many Moroccan travelers. In Tangier visitors will find a lively nightlife and a cosmopolitan vibe. Most Americans hear the name Casablanca and think of the legendary romantic film, but Casablanca is a real place. Casablanca is not an exotic destination, however; it is the economic and cultural capital of Morocco. Visitors will find the best contemporary art the country has to offer in Casablanca art galleries, and cutting edge fashion by designers who stay ahead of trends.

Get a passport. In order to travel to Morocco you will need a passport. Passports take four to six weeks to arrive. You will need to fill out and submit forms and present identification. Acceptable forms of identification include a previously issued U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, valid driver's license, current government I.D. or military I.D. You must also submit a photocopy of an identification document. Since passports take at least four weeks to arrive, applying for your passport should be your first priority. If you already have a passport, locate it and make sure it is not expired.

Pick an airport. Most travelers enter Morocco by way of the Mohammed V International Airport. The airport is 18 miles (30 kilometers) from the famed city of Casablanca. There are four other international airports in Morocco: Fes Airport, Ibn Batouta Airport, Menara Airport and Rabat-Sale Airport.

Choose an airline. There are many airlines that fly into Morocco. Which one you choose will depend on the location of your departure. Book your flight. You can book your flight through a travel agent, or by using one of the many budget travel sites.

Reserve travel accommodations. Often, you can save by booking your flight and hotel accommodations at once. You can do this online or through an agent. Do research before booking your hotel. It would be wise to read customer and professional reviews on a hotel before booking your stay. If there are certain tourist attractions you want to visit, attempt to book a hotel nearby.

Make transportation arrangements. Once in Morocco, you will need to find ways to get around. For transportation to and from the hotel, you can use taxis, buses or go on foot. For longer distances, buses and ferries can transport you from city to city. Ferries sail into several Moroccan ports, but the most popular port is in Tangier. Ferries run every hour. Based on January 2011 rates, a ferry ride into Tangier from Europe costs around $40. Ferry companies include Comarit, Ferry Rapidos del Sur and Transmediterranea. Buses can transport you from Europe to Morocco, or from Morocco to other European cities. Tramesa, Compagnie de Trasnports Marocains and Busabout are bus companies you can use.
