How to Travel With Oxygen

Traveling with oxygen requires extra care and preparation. Educate yourself about how airlines, cruise lines, trains and buses can accommodate you. Car and RV travel allows more flexibility, but keep in mind you're not surrounded by people who can help you. Follow these steps to make your next trip a great experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm with your physician that it's safe for you to travel. You'll also need a doctor's note stating this for airlines and cruise lines. Get more information about oxygen administration from your provider in case you need to seek medical assistance on the road.

    • 2

Make your flight arrangements at least a week in advance so you can notify the airline about your need for oxygen. You can't use your own equipment but ask about packing and labeling requirements for your destination. Any in-terminal oxygen during layovers is up to you to arrange.

    • 3

Notify a cruise line 4 to 6 weeks in advance about your oxygen needs. You have to supply your own on board ship and at each port you plan to disembark. Cruises differ in their requirements so ask a lot of questions to make sure you don't run into problems later.

    • 4

Bring a backup supply of oxygen that's battery powered when you travel by Amtrak. They require only 12 hours' notice, but make arrangements as far in advance as possible. All equipment has to be Underwriter's Laboratory (U.L.) or Factory Mutual (F.M.) listed. Check Amtrak's website for full guidelines.

    • 5

Call Greyhound's customer relations department at (800) 752-4841 for information about traveling with oxygen. They ask for 48 hours' notice, but call them sooner whenever possible. Make arrangements for additional oxygen at layover stops if you think you won't have enough.

    • 6

Consider where you're traveling when taking oxygen in a car or RV. You're more vulnerable to pollution on the road, but you have the freedom to bring your own equipment. Ask your oxygen supplier how to store it in your vehicle.

    • 7

Verify every detail of your travel arrangements 48 hours in advance. Make sure airlines, Amtrak and Greyhound are prepared for you. Call any oxygen suppliers you'll be using on the way.
