Why Brisbane Is Where It Is: Geography and History
Brisbane's site was chosen for:
- River Bend: Brisbane River's wide, navigable reach allowed ship access inland; defensible position.
- Confluence: Meeting of Stanley, Bremer, Lockyer rivers—fresh water, fertile alluvium, Indigenous gathering place.
- Climate & Topography: Subtropical, frost-free, flat land for agriculture and building.
- Penal Colony (1824): British selected Moreton Bay for a remote convict settlement; became Brisbane Town.
- Capital of Queensland (1859): Central location within the new colony.
These factors turned a river crossing into a metropolis of 2.6M (2023).
