When to spay an Australian shepherd?

The best time to spay (remove the uterus and ovaries) an Australian shepherd is between 6 and 9 months of age, before the first heat cycle.

Spaying before the first heat cycle significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer, pyometra (a uterine infection), and other reproductive problems.

If you are waiting to spay until after the first heat cycle, be aware that the hormones during heat can disrupt training, make your dog more vocal, and can attract male dogs from miles around!
