The Australian of the Year Awards are presented on Australia Day to recognise outstanding Australians and their achievements. The awards are given in four categories:
* Australian of the Year
* Young Australian of the Year
* Senior Australian of the Year
* Australia's Local Hero
Order of Australia
The Order of Australia is a national order of chivalry recognising Australian citizens and other people for outstanding achievements and service. The Order is awarded in four grades:
* Companion of the Order of Australia (AC)
* Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)
* Member of the Order of Australia (AM)
* Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)
Other Awards
In addition to the Australian of the Year Awards and the Order of Australia, other awards are also presented on Australia Day. These include:
* The Australian Bravery Decorations recognise acts of bravery by Australian citizens.
* The Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Teaching recognise outstanding teaching practices.
* The Paul Harris Fellowship Award is presented by Rotary International to individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.
