Who was the first englishman to land in Australia?

The first recorded English person to make landfall in present-day Australia was William Dampier, who visited in 1688. Dampier was a privateer and explorer who made two voyages to Australia. During his first voyage, he explored the northwest coast of Australia, while on his second voyage he explored the west and north coasts.
