Who found Newfoundland in 1583?

Newfoundland was officially discovered by the English explorer John Cabot in 1497, but the first European to set foot on the island was the Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) in 1497. Sir Humphrey Gilbert, however, is considered to be the first governor of the English colony of Newfoundland, established in 1583.
