How to Bring Food into Canada from New York

Whether you're a New Yorker taking a vacation in Canada or a Canadian returning home, you'll have to take care when bringing food into Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency regulates all food imports for the safety of Canadians, even if you only intend to use the food for personal use. With a bit of preparation you won't have a problem bringing most of the things you want back into Canada.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the Automated Import Reference System for any restrictions on the items that you want to bring. This is a convenient system set up by the CFIA. You simply select the food you want to bring, the country (United States) and state of origin (New York) and the purpose for bringing it in -- such as personal use -- and the agency will list any restrictions that are on the items.

    • 2

Declare the food items as you go through customs. If you are going by airplane, you'll have to fill out a customs notification that has a section to allow you to declare the food items that you're bringing in. If you're driving through the border, the customs agent will ask if you have anything to declare.

    • 3

Comply with all requests to examine your food. If you have a minor amount of food, the agent may simply wave you through the gates. If you have more, you may be asked to go to the side for a more thorough inspection. In the airport, there's a section for food inspections. If you're going by car, you'll have to drive to a special building.
