Why is the scotia plate named so if it no where near nova scotia?

The Scotia Plate is not named after the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Instead, it's taken from Latin word "scot", referring to dark or shadowy, a reference to the plate lying in the Earth's oceanic realm of darkness.
