Montreal Relay in Bridge: Minor Suit & Short Club Explained
In bridge bidding systems (particularly Canadian/ACBL), the Montreal Relay is a conventional response to 1♣ opening that simultaneously shows:
- Both minor suits (diamonds and clubs) — at least 5-4 or 4-5 shape.
- Shortness in clubs — typically singleton or void (hence "short club").
Structure
After 1♣ (could be natural or Precision-style):
- 1♦ = Montreal Relay → Asks opener to describe shape/strength.
- Opener rebids: 1♥/1♠ = 4+ cards; 1NT = balanced; 2♣ = 6+ clubs (denies shortness); 2♦ = 5+ diamonds; etc.
Why "Montreal"?
Developed in Montreal bridge circles (1970s–80s) as a complement to Walsh Relay (1♦ response to 1♣ showing 4+ diamonds, may have 4+ major). Montreal specifically targets two-suited minor hands with club shortness — hard to describe naturally.
Key Distinction
- If 5+ clubs shown first (e.g., 2♣ rebid) → long club, not Montreal.
- Montreal = minors two-suiter + club shortage. Responder often has 4+ diamonds, short clubs, game-invitational+ values.
Partnership agreement essential. Alertable. Not part of standard 2/1 or SAYC — specialized tool for minor-suit exploration.
