Getting to Byron Bay by Train: The Murwillumbah Connection

There is no train station in Byron Bay. The coastal town was bypassed when the NSW North Coast line was built inland in the 1890s. The nearest rail access is Murwillumbah Station, about 35 km (22 mi) south-west—a 40–50 minute drive.

Murwillumbah Station Details

  • Line: Casino–Murwillumbah branch (formerly main North Coast line)
  • Service: NSW TrainLink coach connections only (rail service suspended beyond Casino since 2004)
  • From Sydney: Train to Casino (~7.5 hrs) → coach to Murwillumbah (~1.5 hrs) → taxi/rideshare to Byron (~45 min)
  • From Brisbane: Train to Varsity Lakes → coach to Murwillumbah → transfer

Better Alternatives to Byron Bay

  • Fly: Ballina–Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) — 30 min drive. Flights from Sydney (1.5h), Melbourne (2h), Newcastle.
  • Direct coach: NSW TrainLink / Premier Motor Service / Greyhound run Sydney → Byron (10–12h) and Brisbane → Byron (2h).
  • Drive: Pacific Highway (M1) — ~8h from Sydney, ~1.75h from Brisbane.
  • Shuttle: Door-to-door services from Ballina airport, Gold Coast, Brisbane.

Why No Train?

The original railway terminated at Murwillumbah (1894). A proposed extension to Byron Bay/Tweed Heads was never built. The line north of Casino closed in 2004; tracks remain but are unused. Campaigns for light rail or heavy rail revival persist but face cost/geology hurdles.

Bottom line: Don't plan a train arrival to Byron Bay. Fly to Ballina or take a direct coach.
