What does Calgary mean?

Calgary (/ˈkælɡəri/), is a city in the province of Alberta, Canada. It is located in the south of the province, in an area of foothills and prairie, roughly 80 kilometres (50 mi) east of the Rocky Mountains. Calgary is bisected by the Bow River and has a population of just under 1.3 million people. It is the third-largest city in Alberta and the fifth-largest in Canada.

The name Calgary is derived from the Scottish Gaelic word Cala-ghàidh meaning, "pasture by the river". The name was first used by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1821 to refer to a HBC trading post at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers.
