Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962. The 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee) was celebrated on August 6, 2012 with nationwide events, royal visits, and cultural festivities.
The phrase "next 50th independence" is linguistically tricky. Independence anniversaries don't repeat every 50 years—they accumulate. The next 50-year milestone after 2012 would be the 100th anniversary in 2062. There is no "second 50th anniversary"—only one 50th, one 100th, etc.
Independence Day (first Monday in August) features: Grand Gala at National Stadium, parish festivals, flag-raising ceremonies, cultural performances, Jamaica Festival song competition, and diaspora events worldwide. The 2012 Golden Jubilee included Prince Harry's visit and a year-long celebration program.
Mark your calendar: Jamaica's centenary of independence arrives August 6, 2062—a once-in-a-lifetime national milestone.
