Dubai's Ruling Title: Emir and Sheikha, Not King and Queen

Dubai does not have a "king" and "queen." Its ruler holds the title Emir (Prince/Commander), and his spouse is Sheikha.

  • Current Emir: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum – Also Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai since 2006.
  • Sheikha: Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum – His senior wife; active in philanthropy, education, women's empowerment.

The UAE is a federation of seven emirates, each ruled by an Emir. The President of the UAE is elected from among the Emirs (traditionally the Emir of Abu Dhabi). This system differs from European-style monarchies with kings/queens; titles reflect tribal/sheikhly governance traditions adapted to a modern federal state.
