Ames Monument Near Laramie, Wyoming

The Ames Monument is a pyramidal granite structure located about 20 miles east of Laramie, Wyoming, near the former Sherman Summit on the original Transcontinental Railroad route. Completed in 1882, it honors brothers Oakes and Oliver Ames, key financiers of the Union Pacific Railroad. Designed by H.H. Richardson, it marks the highest point (8,247 ft) on the original line.
