The flag of the Cayman Islands has three horizontal bands of equal width, with a white band encasing the coat of arms in the middle blue band.
There are three symbols in the coat of arms:
- A green and white turtle which represents the indigenous Green Sea Turtles.
- A yellow anchor which represents the islands’ seafaring heritage.
- An yellow Cayman lizard facing the anchor.
The lion that encircles the shield appears on the shield of Jamaica. The islands were briefly claimed by Jamaica in 1655, but the lion represents the continued link with the UK (Jamaica attained its independence in 1962) rather than with Jamaica.
The motto below the shield states: “He Hath Founded It Upon the Seas”.
The flag is based on the Blue Ensign. The Cayman Islands Ensign is the island's national flag used primarily at sea and its civil air ensign.
