How did some of the names Antarctic locations come about?

1. The Ross Sea, was named after British naval officer Sir James Clark Ross, who first charted it in 1841.

2. The Weddell Sea was named after British sealer James Weddell, who first explored it in 1823.

3. The Larsen Ice Shelf was named after Norwegian whaling captain Carl Anton Larsen, who discovered it in 1893.

4. The Shackleton Range was named after British explorer Ernest Shackleton, who led the first expedition to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914-17.

5. The South Pole is the southernmost point on the globe, and is located at 90 degrees south latitude.
