Two Christmas Islands: One in the Indian Ocean, One in the Pacific

There are two distinct territories named Christmas Island:

1. Christmas Island (Australia) – Indian Ocean, 2,600 km NW of Perth. An Australian external territory known for phosphate mining, red crab migrations, and unique biodiversity.
2. Christmas Island (Kiribati) – Central Pacific, part of the Line Islands, ~2,200 km NE of Sydney. A coral atoll with lagoons, beaches, and marine life; part of the Republic of Kiribati.

They are separated by ~6,000 km and share only a name—given by European explorers who encountered each on December 25.
