When did they dig the Panama Canal?

Construction of the Panama Canal began in January 1881, under the supervision of French engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps. The French operation encountered numerous challenges, including difficult terrain, tropical diseases, and financial difficulties, and was eventually abandoned in 1889. The United States took over the project in 1904, and successfully completed the canal in 1914.
