What happened in Mexico 1821?

Mexico declared its independence from Spain on September 16, 1821.

This event, known as the "Grito de Dolores," was sparked by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla's call to arms against Spanish colonial rule. Hidalgo, a priest in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato, rallied a group of indigenous people and mestizos (people of mixed European and indigenous descent) to fight against the Spanish. The insurgents captured several towns in central Mexico, and the movement spread quickly throughout the country.

The Spanish government sent troops to suppress the rebellion, but the insurgents were able to defeat them in several battles. In August 1821, the Spanish Viceroy of New Spain, Juan Ruiz de Apodaca, signed a treaty with the insurgents that recognized Mexico's independence. The treaty was ratified by the Spanish Cortes in 1822, and Mexico became a sovereign nation.

The Mexican War of Independence was a significant event in Latin American history. It was one of the first successful revolutions against European colonial rule in the Americas, and it inspired other colonies to rebel against their rulers. The Mexican War of Independence also laid the foundation for the formation of the modern Mexican nation.
