What are the relationships between Mexican authorities and Anglos settling in Texas?

Initially: Cooperation and Collaboration

- In the early 1800s, Mexican authorities often encouraged Anglo settlement in Texas. They needed settlers to populate and secure the territory of Texas. Mexican laws offered generous land grants to Anglos from the United States.

Growing conflict and tensions:

- However, as more Anglos entered Texas, conflicts soon developed. Mexico had different cultural, political, and religious values; for example, Mexico allowed religious freedom, but they also established the state religion; Roman Catholicism—something many Protestant newcomers resented.

.

- Over time Anglo settlers began outnumbering the Mexican residents 50,000 to fewer than 5,000 by 1835. There were fears by the Anglo minority group of domination from Mexican authorities which caused an increasing political rift leading to the Texas Revolt. Many Texas Anglos who rebelled against Texas were actually citizens of Mexico but saw an opportunity to own the lands they felt should have belonged to the US under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
