Languages Spoken in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has two official languages:

  • Spanish – Primary language of daily life, government, media, education, culture for ~95%+ of the population.
  • English – Taught as a mandatory second language in schools; used in federal courts, some business/tourism contexts; fluency varies widely.

Most Puerto Ricans are Spanish-dominant bilinguals (understand English, varying speaking proficiency). A small minority are English-dominant (stateside returnees, expats). The linguistic landscape reflects 400+ years of Spanish rule followed by 125+ years of U.S. sovereignty.
