Education Governance in Puerto Rico: Department of Education, Not a Ministry
Puerto Rico does not have a Ministry of Education. As a U.S. territory, its education system is led by the Puerto Rico Department of Education (PRDE).
Structure
- Secretary of Education: Appointed by the Governor, confirmed by Senate. Heads PRDE.
- PRDE: Oversees public schools (K–12), curriculum, teacher certification, federal programs.
- Federal Role: U.S. Dept. of Education provides funding (Title I, IDEA) and enforces civil rights laws.
- Higher Ed: Separate—University of Puerto Rico (public) and private institutions; accredited by U.S. bodies.
Key Distinction
“Ministry” implies a sovereign national cabinet post. Puerto Rico’s government uses “Department” (Departamento de Educación) consistent with U.S. state/territory terminology.
Current Secretary (2024): Yanira Raíces Vega (interim). Check de.pr.gov for updates.
