The first Europeans to arrive in Guyana were Spanish explorers in the late 15th century. They were searching for a route to India and stumbled upon the South American coast.
2. Colonisation
In the early 17th century, the Dutch established a colony in Guyana, which they named "Berbice". They were followed by the British, who established a colony called "Essequibo" in the mid-17th century. The French also established a colony called "Cayenne" in the late 17th century.
3. Slave Trade
The European colonisers used Guyana as a base for the slave trade. They captured African slaves and transported them to the Caribbean and North America. The slave trade had a devastating impact on Guyana's population and economy.
4. Independence
Guyana gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. The country is now a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Commonwealth of Nations.
