Why the pledge of Guyana written?

I Pledge Myself to Guyana is the national pledge of Guyana. It was written by Archbishop P. F. Coleridge in 1966. The pledge is as follows:

I pledge myself to Guyana, her people, her rivers and her plains.

I vow to be loyal to her, in her strength and in her pain,

To do my utmost for her progress, and to honour her good name.

May God the Almighty bless her and make her great.

The pledge is recited in schools, at national events, and at other formal occasions. It is a reminder of the citizens' commitment to their country and their fellow citizens.
