What is el morado?
El Morado is a traditional Ecuadorian dessert soup made with purple corn, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and various types of fruits such as naranjilla, pineapple, babaco, and moras. The purple corn gives the soup its distinctive purple color. El Morado is often served warm with a side of empanadas or bread rolls. This dessert soup is especially popular during the month of November when it is used to honor the deceased during Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations.
Morado can also refer to another Ecuadorian drink consisting of mixed fresh juices and fruits such as berries, passion fruit, orange juice, naranjilla and pineapple. Usually this version tends to be sweet but has other variations which tend to be a bit too tangy.
