How did Wake Island get its name?
The atoll was first sighted by the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Saavedra in 1528, and he named it "San Francisco". The name likely changed when English explorer Samuel Wallis explored and claimed the island for England in August 1767, and named it "Wake Island" after his first officer with the Royal Navy, William Wake.
