Why was Puerto Rico named Rico?
The name "Puerto Rico" does not come from "rico" (meaning "rich" in Spanish), but rather from the Spanish adjective "rico" ("rich" in nutrients, fertile), referring to the fertile land and lush vegetation of the island. Christopher Columbus, who arrived on the island in 1493, named it San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist), after the patron saint of his flagship, but the island was later renamed "Puerto Rico" due to its abundant natural resources.
