How did Magnetic Island get its name?

The indigenous name for Magnetic Island is _Yunbenun_. James Cook renamed it Magnetic Island in 1770 after one of the ships in his command, HMS _Endeavour_, was diverted from its course, and Cook used the ship’s compass to demonstrate the island’s natural magnetism.
