Where did Kodiak island get its name from?

Kodiak Island's name comes the Alutiiq words: "qikertaq", meaning "great island" but a corrupted transcription of the name for the native Koniag people, "Qiġiktaq", who are the indigenous inhabitants of the island of Kodiak.
