The Caribbean is made up of thousands of land masses that stretch from Bermuda, which is off the coast of the eastern United States, to Trinidad and Tobago, located off the coast of South America. Other islands include Jamaica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas and others.
The area is easily reachable by airplane. Most of the more-developed islands have airports that accommodate major air carriers. Depending on which island you are visiting, air travel from New York to the Caribbean can take between 2.5 and 5 hours. Of course, given that the Caribbean is surrounded by water, arriving by boat is always an option. Most cruise lines offer Caribbean tours.
The Caribbean earned its title as one of the most desirable travel locations for a reason. Weather in the Caribbean is primarily pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging anywhere from the mid 60s (F) to the 90s (F) and up. These excellent conditions make it ideal for beach going--just do not forget the sunscreen because the sun is extremely intense due to the Caribbean's proximity to the equator. Hurricane season in the Caribbean is typically from May to December.
The area is a diverse vacation destination with a range of cultural and sporting activities beyond just beach going. Popular tourist activities include water sports, dining, music, nightlife and shopping.
Because each island has its own personality, visitors have a range of accommodation options. For the high-end travelers, the Caribbean has resorts, luxury hotels, villas and spas. Other more economic options include rustic campsites, home exchange or a country guesthouse.
When traveling to the Caribbean, it is important to remember to pack your beach gear and sunscreen. Do not forget a sweatshirt or long-sleeved item because the nights can get cool, depending on the time of year. Most importantly, bring your good attitude and desire for fun. The Caribbean is a relaxed, friendly place you are sure to enjoy.
