Disadvantage of Tourism in the Bahamas

At the closest point, the Bahamas are less than 50 miles from Florida. It is a popular travel destination for tourists from the United States and around the world. There are, however, some downsides to keep in mind if planning a trip to the Bahamas.
  1. Weather

    • Hurricane season runs from June 1 to September 30, and although there is generally plenty of advance warning, major storms might disrupt your travel or stay.

    Cost

    • Many of the islands in the Bahamas house resorts that, although prices vary throughout the year, can be costly. In general, finding low-cost lodging can be difficult.

    Crime

    • Crime rates in the Bahamas are relatively high. As of 2009, incidents of violent crime have been on the rise, especially on New Providence Island, where the capital city, Nassau, is located. The most common type of crime is pickpocketing, but armed robbery and sexual assault have also been reported.
