When did coral first appear on earth?

Coral first appeared on Earth approximately 505 million years ago, during the Cambrian period. They belong to a group of marine invertebrates known as Cnidaria, which also includes jellyfish and sea anemones. The earliest coral fossils are known as archaeocyathids, and they were abundant during the Cambrian period but became extinct towards the end of it.
