Dominican Travel Requirements

The Dominican Republic is a nation making up part of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. By area and population it is the second-largest nation in the Caribbean after Cuba. It has a mixture of European, African and native Taíno Indian cultural heritage. The island has spectacular mountainous terrain, tropical beaches and golf courses. If you plan to travel to the Dominican Republic, you must meet certain entry-requirements.
  1. Passports

    • Based on the proposed date of departure from the Dominican Republic, your passports must have six months or more before expiring to be valid. This rule applies to everyone, with the following exceptions: Canadians who are traveling for business or tourism must have appropriate identification such as a birth certificate or driver's license with a photo. Citizens of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and France can present their national identification card. (Entry to the country is always at the discretion of immigration.)

    Tourist Cards

    • Tourist cards are issued to any traveler staying in the Dominican Republic for up to two weeks. They can be purchased and issued on arrival for $10 (U.S.). Extensions of up to three months are possible by visiting the immigration department in San Domingo. Eligible nationals for a tourist card include citizens of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, European Union countries, Australia, Japan, Andorra, Antigua, Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Croatia, Curaçao, Dominica, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Macedonia (the former Yugoslav Republic), Martinique, Mexico, Monaco, Norway, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Reunion, the Russian Federation, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, Serbia and Montenegro, Surinam, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Ukraine, U.S. Virgin Islands and Venezuela.

    Visa

    • For reasons other than short-term tourism, you will require a visa to enter the Dominican Republic. Visa specifications should be checked with your local Dominican Republic embassy. For information, you can call the Dominican Republic Embassy in Washington, D.C. Citizens of Cyprus, Estonia, Japan, Latvia, Malta and Slovak Republic need a visa to enter the Dominican Republic for any purpose. Nationals of China (PR) require an authorization from the Director of the Migration/Immigration Department in addition to a visa.     Exceptions

    • Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa or tourist card to enter the Dominican Republic: Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Iceland, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Liechtenstein, Peru and Uruguay.
