Activities in La Romana, Dominican Republic

La Romana is the capitol city of the southern coast region of Dominican Republic, also known as La Romana. Favored for its white sand beaches, La Romana is also known for great fishing and sugar mills. This sugar industry helped spawn the region's notoriety for turning out many professional baseball players. According to local historians, sugar mill workers would pick up bats and balls during the slow months of sugar production, beginning the Dominican passion for baseball. La Romana has much to offer visitors: it's baseball history, golf, water activities or just lounging on the beach.

    Altos de Chavon Village

    • Altos de Chavon Village, situated on the cliffs above the Chavon River, is a reproduction of a 16th century Mediterranean village, constructed in the 1970s as a Dominican arts and cultural center. The Church of St. Stanislaus sits in the heart of the village, surrounded by what seems to be a centuries old village of wood, stone and iron, created by the hands of artisans. The village contains a Museum of Archeology, the Altos de Chavon School of Design, an art gallery, and an open-air amphitheater showcasing cultural highlights and concerts. Quaint Shops and eateries line the winding cobblestone village streets. You can visit on your own or take an arranged tour.
