Types of Sea Cucumber in the Caribbean Region

Sea cucumbers are part of a group known as echinoderms, which also includes starfish and sea urchins. There are over 1,250 species of sea cucumbers around the world, all of which reside in the ocean or beneath the ocean floor. The Caribbean region contain six different species of sea cucumber.
  1. Three-Rowed Sea Cucumber

    • The three-rowed sea cucumber is also known as the chocolate chip sea cucumber and cookie dough sea cucumber. This sea cucumber can be yellow, red or greenish with brown or yellow spots. The three-rowed sea cucumber grows to be between 10 to 16 inches in length, and lives up to 200 feet below the surface of the ocean. The three-rowed sea cucumber can be found in the Caribbean, Florida, Bahamas and Bermuda.

    Furry Sea Cucumber

    • The furry sea cucumber is generally found in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. This type of sea cucumber is generally yellow and white spotted and furry in appearance. The furry sea cucumber grows to be 10 to 16 inches in length.

    Donkey Dung Sea Cucumber

    • The donkey dung sea cucumber is blackish-brown in color and ridged. This sea cucumber can be found up to 120 feet below the surface of the ocean, and is located in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida Keys. The donkey dung sea cucumber can grow to be 10 to 14 inches in length.

    Tiger Tail Sea Cucumber

    • The tiger tail sea cucumber is one of the largest sea cucumbers measuring three to six feet in length. This sea cucumber is striped like a tiger and spiney. The tiger tail lives between 10 and 100 feet below the surface of the water and resides in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida.
