Five Key Producers in a Temperate Rainforest

Producers (autotrophs) form the base of the temperate rainforest food web. Five major groups:

1. Canopy Trees: Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, western redcedar, western hemlock—dominate light capture.
2. Epiphytic Mosses & Liverworts: Carpet trunks and branches; intercept moisture, host invertebrates.
3. Ferns: Sword fern, deer fern, lady fern—thrive in understory shade and humidity.
4. Understory Shrubs & Forbs: Salal, huckleberry, Oregon grape, vanilla leaf, trillium—flower/fruit for pollinators & dispersers.
5. Phytoplankton & Periphyton: In streams, lakes, and wetlands—base of aquatic food chains.

High rainfall, mild temps, and nutrient cycling from nurse logs create one of Earth’s most biomass-dense forests.
