Where Is Chaco Canyon?

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is located in the northwestern corner of New Mexico, USA, within the San Juan Basin.

Coordinates & Access

• Nearest town: Nageezi, NM (~20 mi north).
• Major highways: US-550 (north) or NM-57/CR-7900 (south) — both involve 13–20 miles of unpaved, washboard roads. High-clearance vehicle recommended.
• GPS: 36.0583° N, 107.9594° W (Visitor Center).

Geographic Context

The San Juan Basin spans NW New Mexico, SW Colorado, SE Utah, and NE Arizona. Chaco sits in a high-desert canyon (1,850–2,000 m elevation) carved by the Chaco Wash, a tributary of the San Juan River.

Why It Matters

Between 850–1250 CE, Chaco was the ceremonial, economic, and administrative center of the Ancestral Puebloan world—featuring massive "great houses" (Pueblo Bonito, Chetro Ketl), kivas, roads, and astronomical alignments. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
