Current Premier (as of 2024)

R.J. (Bob) Simpson has served as Premier of the Northwest Territories since October 2023, following the 2023 territorial election. He represents the Hay River North district.

Note on the Previous Answer

The earlier response naming Bob McLeod (Premier 2011–2019) was outdated. Caroline Cochrane served 2019–2023. Simpson is the 13th Premier since responsible government was granted in 1980.

Role & Selection

• The Premier is the head of government in the consensus-style Legislative Assembly (no political parties).
• Elected by the 19 MLAs after each general election.
• Selects the Executive Council (cabinet).
